Landscape material calculators by category

Every landscape material calculator on YardCalcHub answers the same question – how much do I need to buy? – in the units suppliers actually sell in: cubic yards, tons, bags, pallets, squares or truckloads. Pick the group that matches your project.

Gravel & aggregates

Crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock and crusher run are sold by the ton or by the cubic yard, and the conversion depends on the stone. The gravel calculator turns your length, width and depth into both, with truckload and wheelbarrow counts for delivery day. Building a new driveway? Work through the base, middle and top layers in the gravel driveway layers guide, and check stone weights in the landscape material weight chart.

Soil & mulch

Topsoil, fill dirt, garden mix and mulch all look alike in a pile but behave differently. The topsoil calculator adds an allowance for settling, the fill dirt calculator applies the 1.25–1.30 compaction factor that grading jobs need, and the mulch calculator counts bags in 1.5, 2 and 3 cu ft or 50 litre sizes alongside bulk yards. For beds and trees, see how much soil for a raised bed and how to mulch around trees.

Pavers & hardscaping

A paver patio is a stack of materials: compacted base gravel, an inch of bedding sand, the pavers themselves and joint sand on top. The paver calculator sizes all four, sets waste by laying pattern – about 5% for running bond up to 20% for circles – and adjusts the base depth for a patio, walkway or driveway. The paver walkway guide and gravel patio guide walk through the build.

Asphalt & driveways

Asphalt is sold by weight, so the mix matters. The asphalt calculator has presets for hot mix, stone matrix, open-graded and cold patch, and shows tons, truckloads and the thickness to spread before rolling. Not sure which repair to use? Read cold patch vs hot mix asphalt.

Volume conversions & siding

For any other material, the cubic yard calculator converts feet, inches and meters to cubic yards, rounds the order to your supplier's step and counts concrete bags. On the house itself, the siding calculator works out squares, vinyl boxes, fiber cement planks and the trim – J-channel, starter strip and corner posts.

Three numbers to get right before you order

  1. Depth. Most mistakes come from guessing the depth. Each calculator suggests a typical depth for the job – 2–3 inches of mulch, 4 inches of topsoil for a lawn, 4–6 inches of paver base.
  2. Weight per yard. A cubic yard of mulch can weigh 600 lb; a yard of gravel is closer to 2,800 lb. If your supplier sells by the ton, use their density figure.
  3. Extra. Loose materials settle, fill dirt compacts and pavers need cuts. Every tool includes a sensible allowance you can change.

Our methodology and data sources page lists every default, formula and source. Prefer meters? Every calculator has a metric toggle that switches the inputs to meters and centimeters and shows results in m³, litres and kilograms. Deciding between bags and a delivery? The bag vs bulk buying guide has a break-even formula.

How our calculators work

  1. MeasureMeasure length and width in feet. Split odd shapes into rectangles, circles and triangles.
  2. Enter depthType the depth in inches. Each calculator suggests a typical depth for the job.
  3. OrderGet cubic yards, tons, bags and cost, plus a little extra for settling and waste.

Every calculator uses the same simple math: area × depth gives volume, 27 cubic feet make a cubic yard, and a material's weight per yard turns yards into tons. Each page shows the formula, a worked example and the default values it uses, and you can change those values to match your supplier.

Results are estimates for planning and ordering. Always confirm final quantities with your supplier or contractor.
